Review of Make Way for Tomorrow (1937) by Eduardo C — 14 Jan 2014
Orson Welles called this the saddest film ever made. I would not go that far but it is tragic. It concerns a happily married couple who have been married for 50 years who lose their home. They lack savings because they have spent it all on their 5 kids.
However, the five kids, now all grown, and about middle aged, refuse to take care of them, not because they cannot but because they find it inconvenient to do so. This forces the parents to split up. Their last day together reliving memories of their honeymoon and then saying goodbye at a train station is indeed heartbreaking.
