Review of Major League (1989) by Mike F — 01 Mar 2009
One of the definitive baseball movies of all time. there are hilarious sequences and nostalgic moments that make it an endearing classic. along with a christmas story, this movie immortalizes cleveland in the annals of film lore.
from the opening song, "burn on" by randy newman to the shots of the old stadium before dick jacobs took over, it wonderfully presents cleveland as an historic city. charlie sheen, tom berenger, and corbin bernsen deliver good performances as the team's top players.
rene russo practically defined her career from this movie, as did wesley snipes as willie mays hays. the classic glasses that sheen wears as the wild thing became a cultural icon in cleveland up to this very day.
but it is bob uecker who steals the show with his top-notch performance as harry doyle, the epitome of sportscaster. bottom line: great comedy and one liners mixed with baseball action equals a great film.
