Review of Major Dundee (1965) by David T — 29 Jul 2007
Sam Peckinpah's "Lost Masterpiece" isn't any more of a classic in its restored form than it was in its original incarnation, but it is slightly more complete (though the new musical score is even worse than the old, if that's possible).
Die-hard Peckinpah fans may feel this was a masterpiece in the making, ruined by a callous studio, but taken on its own merits "Major Dundee" is a brilliant action/adventure Western. The storyline itself is a wonderful exploration of the American character, with Yankees, Confederates, Indians, Mexicans, and various scum and gutter trash being forced to work together to fight a common enemy.
The movie features Charlton Heston and Richard Harris at their absolute best, and the supporting cast of character actors (particularly James Coburn, Warren Oats, Mario Adorf, Brock Peters, and R.G. Armstrong) is nothing short of amazing.
The original soundtrack is really silly, corny, and ridiculous (especially the Apache beeping noise), but it's in-keeping with the general tone of the film. Don't expect a masterpiece, just a fun ride.
