Review of Major Dundee (1965) by Geonard Y — 08 Apr 2007
Directed by Sam Peckinpah.
Starring Charlton Heston, Richard Harris, Jim Hutton, James Coburn, Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, L.Q. Jones.
Twilight-blue, dust-redÑsuch beautiful photography. Peckinpah was more than an influence after his career, his movies were an inspiration into how to make the West look good again. Cinematography-speaking, the movie has it, as an intelligent-Western, it has not. Heston is Dundee out to demolish the Apaches clear out of history but with an inadequate army, he is forced to hire Confederate prisoners led by the inimitable Richard Harris. Dundee is your certified nut soldier with too much alcohol in his system he wouldnÕt feel an arrow pierce his leg. On the first fight with the Injuns no ÒmajorÓ nor minor characters perishÑstandard Hollywood, to top it off, the fight scenes are more ÒBlazing SaddlesÓ than ÒWild Bunch.Ó.
Best Scene: The fight with the French.
QUOTE: Dundee: ÒI have but three orders to march: If I signal you to come, you come. If I signal you to charge, you charge. And if I signal you to run, you follow me and run like hell.Ó.
