Review of Magnum Force (1973) by Mike M — 05 Jul 2012
Enjoyable but far-lesser installment in the Dirty Harry franchise. In this, the first sequel, Callahan finds himself on the trail of rogue vigilante cop responsible for a bloody trail of gangsters, pimps and other ne-er-do-wells throughout San Francisco.
While amping up the violence quota, this flick dials down the relevant social commentary, as the narrative nears parody upon climax. Director Post also proves lesser-than Siegel in providing tension, as Magnum Force plays pedestrian in far too many sequences.
Still, it's Dirty Harry, after all - and it still does have its fun moments (including Harry masquerading as an airline pilot early on). Look for young Robert Urich, David Post and Tim Matheson is early feature roles.
Another great Lalo Schifrin soundtrack, too.
