Review of Magnolia (1999) by Brandon S — 23 Nov 2012
An absolutely magnificent modern epic. This mosaic will hold you in it's intangible performance-fueled grasp. Paul Thomas Anderson directs this masterpiece with impeccable skill and cinematic vision.
He uses vivid imagery and dark comedy with absolutely fantastic plot structure and progression. The most noteworthy performances by this incredible ensemble are Philip Seymour Hoffman and Tom Cruise. Cruise performs with such skillful acting mastery and beautifully timed vulgarity.
Hoffman's dialogue felt very natural and well written, not to say that the entire film wasn't well written. It has countless subliminal messages about the masks put on by members of our society.
Many of the film's elements are almost quite operatic. Lots of people are turned off to this movie due to its 3 hour length but you cannot be turned off for that reason alone. Hands down one of the greatest films ever made!
