Review of Magnolia (1999) by Kayvon P — 29 May 2011
Really unique and bizarre movie (by the director of There Will Be Blood) that incorporates multiple stories together that are connected by a famous game show on TV. Tom Cruise quite possibly puts in his greatest performance ever as this sex therapy consultant and the acting overall is superb.
There is a profound message of hope and love at the end of the movie which really hits me each and every time. I'm not giving the full 5 stars because I felt like the raining frogs and its biblical importance could have been explained to the audience better.
Everyone I watched it with was confused but in the Bible, raining frogs were a plague sent by God to promote the freedom of slaves. Freeing one's self from one's painful past is the message the movie strives to express.
Although, the message is profound and beautiful, it could have been more clear. In the end, this is a very long movie (over 3 hours) but there wasn't a dull moment for me at all which is indicative of a well-made movie.
