Review of Magnolia (1999) by Andrew T — 30 Jul 2012
A huge, energetic, achingly sad, and wonderfully moving film about ordinary people at their most raw and vulnerable. Long, but never less than enthralling, Magnolia is an absolute must-see. The best film by Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the greatest filmmakers working today.
Should have received a slew of Oscars. It's a flat-out masterpiece in every sense of the word. It doesn't need a unifying point; it's as messy and unpredictable as life itself, and it's endless layers of thematic relevance can resonate in different ways with any viewer willing to put up with its length and raw, unpolished emotion.
No matter how often I watch Magnolia, I always take something new from it that haunts me for days, even weeks on end.
