It's saying something when a film is 3 hours long and doesn't feel like it could have been any shorter. One of the benefits of watching this on DVD is that I was able to Google the verse in Exodus the guy held up toward the beginning and was thus on the look-out for further foreshadowing.
If I had seen this first, I might have been less surprised by John C. Reilly being in Cyrus.
