Review of Magnolia (1999) by Kyle B — 12 Feb 2015
The 3 hour runtime wears off its welcome fast but the performances are gripping and the writing is great. The notable stand outs are Julianne Moore (one of her best), William H. Macy (one of his best), John C.
Reilly, Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Melora Walters, and the cameo from Alfred Molina. Paul Thomas Anderson knows how to craft a large ensemble piece (or should I say knew since he didn't do it well in Inherent Vice), and he gives most of these characters have the time to tell their stories well.
Like I said, some of this movie could have been cut down there was some stuff that just could have been left out. The ending was a big surprise and a head scratcher that obviously needs time to think about as a metaphor.
Overall, great ensemble work and writing, could have used some tightening up.
