Review of Magnificent Obsession (1935) by Lynne N — 04 Apr 2010
The plot is a little far-fetched, even for Sirk, but that is just one flaw and is easily forgiven. Everything else about Magnificent Obsession clearly demonstrates Sirk's genius - and the movie is filled with the common marks of his work - beautiful photography and use of colour, intelligent symbolism, multiple layers and subtexts and, of course, the beautiful Rock Hudson in a leading role.
Not as moving as some of his other works (Imitation of Life will always be my favourite I think), but still a brilliant piece of cinema from one of the best Directors in the business.
