Review of Magic Mike XXL (2015) by Graham B — 06 Jul 2015
Picking up the story three years later, Mike is now running his bespoke furniture business, but his dream isn't quite what he hoped for. When The Kings of Tampa roll into town he is tempted back to the stage. After Dallas and The Kid have ditched them and taken their show to China (so McConaughay and Pettyfur couldn't be bothered with this one) and the remaining guys are off to Myrtle Beach for one last big show before they throw in the towel. Mike decides to join back up with them and off they go on a bro jolly.
Where the original took itself a bit too seriously and turned into a bummer of a film at times, XXL takes the opposite approach and ditches any real plot. sadly this is to its detriment as the film grasps at straws to keep the audiences attention.
It is always a pleasure to see Mr. Tatum disrobe and shake his moneymaker, but even the tame stripping fails here. Not particularly sexy. Not well shot. Pacing so bad I was bored for through the middle reel. This should have been a bro's on tour and getting up to mischief. A bit of fun and interspaced with some of the hot dance sequences of the likes of the original. Sadly it's all a bit meh. Has some fun moments, but you can see those in the trailer. Shame.
