Review of Magic Mike XXL (2015) by Tatsuhito K — 09 Jul 2015
A satisfying and ridiculously entertaining sequel to 2012's Magic Mike. The plot is borderline passable (after all this is a road trip film,) and the overall atmosphere is lighter than the predecessor.
Though the absence of a scene-stealing Matthew McConaughey hurts like hell, it doesn't stop the Kings of Tampa from stripping their pants off. The first Magic Mike was a cautionary tale done in the style of an art-house sexploitation film.
Magic Mike XXL, however, is aiming for nothing but a really good time, and it works. As the cast dances and strips to many toe-tapping songs, you can tell that they had a ball making this film. It is beautifully shot (Soderbergh serves as the director of photography and editor), and the dance sequences are quite entertaining to watch.
The bottom line is: If you are a fan of the previous film and loved getting Channing all over your Tatum by Channing Tatum, you won't be disappointed. MMXXL is flimsy and flawed, but really good raunchy fun.
