Review of Magic Mike (2012) by Caleb C — 04 May 2015
A movie promo'd to get the fans of male strippers in by one of the great directors of time. This was a smart move for this tale that was smarter than it's audiences. Turns out, it's actually a brilliantly scripted and executed film that plays as more of a deep character piece than anything and one that anyone who appreciates well structured films are likely to enjoy.
Channing Tatum at the lead here flawlessly plays a broken man trying to find his place in the world and eagerly wanting to capture success or the american dream, and along the way, true love. Dreams always come with a price and this story plays out like a truly organic story.
It's also beautifully shot, mostly outside the clubs and surprisingly enough, stripping is a very small aspect to this film that never feels nearly as trashy as one would think going in. Overall, this is one of the more underrated films from 2012 that is actually worth a look and not a movie just for what most would expect it's "target" audience to enjoy and maybe more so for the cinephiles.
