Review of Magic Mike (2012) by Walter M — 09 Jan 2014

"Magic Mike" starts with Joanna(Olivia Munn) having to go commando that day due to the raucous events of the night before where neither her nor Mike(Channing Tatum) can remember the name of the women they had sex with. For his day job, Mike works as a roofer where he meets 19-year old Adam(Alex Pettyfer) who got the job on Craigslist and promptly loses it when he is caught stealing soda. Luckily enough, Adam gets another job when Mike hires him to do odd jobs at the strip club where he dances at night. And then Dallas(Matthew McConaughey) taps Adam to fill in for another dancer...

First, "Magic Mike" is about male strippers in Tampa. And...well, to be honest, the movie forgets to be about anything else except playing the Peter Pan card in using the phrase '30-year old male stripper' as the gravest of insults while warning about the dangers of bad credit working in a cash business. But none of that should be a huge problem as long as one declares everything to the IRS. All of which is massively ironic considering Matthew McConaughey takes the time and the movie to give the younger actors, especially the bland Channing Tatum, acting lessons. Like I always say, if you have it, flaunt it.
