Review of Magic in the Moonlight (2014) by Barry T — 23 Sep 2014
No, this is so wrong. Magic in the Moonlight was such a disappointment that not even charming Emma Stone can save it from its ridiculousness. It's basically about Stanley (Colin Firth), someone who's against mediums and any other supernatural belief.
So she meets Sophie (Emma Stone), a medium who seems to have the answers to everything. The thread of the story is basically seeing how Stanley changes from not believing in mediums to believing in them.
But then he discovers he was right all along because some jealous competitor pulled a really elaborated prank, to force him to deceive his principles. Am I interested in this? No. Does this sound ridiculous? I'll let you answer that.
Moreover, I can't imagine someone in real life who changes their spiritual beliefs in a short period of time, specially someone as analytical and skeptical as Colin Firth's character. This could've been a great film, but I just didn't care enough about the characters nor the story.
This is probably one of the most disappointing Woody Allen films, and I hate saying this because he's one of my favorite directors.
