Review of Made of Honor (2008) by Kelly E — 17 Aug 2010
For attending both stage and screen productions, this reviewer keeps by his side a constant companion whose unwavering camaraderie has proven invaluable through times both enlightening and exasperating?a trusty flask. This stainless steel comrade saw a benchmark, of sorts, with the screening of My Best Friend?s Wedding?oops, better make that Made of Honor. Surprisingly, this reviewer finished the double-blend contents of the whole effing thing! And no, this recycled romantic comedy is not necessarily bad enough to trigger the DTs?unless the audience was seeing it for the umpteenth time which they were. In fact, moviegoers have seen this cookie cutter fluff so many countless times that, by this go-round, alcoholism will begin to look damn inviting.
In the PG-13 The Wedding Planner?damn, better make that Made of Honor, a commitment-phobic bachelor (Dempsey) finds his true feelings put to the test when his best friend and lifelong crush (Monaghan) asks him to be her maid of honor.
And yes, there are sex jokes, bridesmaids sparring, and a ?speak now or forever hold your peace? moment for one?s viewing pleasure?again, like the last 5 times you saw this movie. If it were not for the chemistry of Dempsey and Monaghan, however, the whole she-bang would have gone bust with the opening credits. Switching the setting to Scotland in the third act also makes for some inspired choices. But The Philadelphia Story?er, better make that Made of Honor simply comes at the very end of a long list of comedies that have already walked us down this aisle.
Bottom line: My best friend?s doodie.
