Review of Mad Max 2 (1981) by Aimee M — 13 Jun 2010
An awesome leap forward from the first and one of the greatest twists for a sequel that I can remember. Although I knew that the world for Mad Max would change in the sequel, I didn't know how they would sell it- but it worked.
Bigger budget this time around and Mel Gibson looks harder and tougher with his roughed-up outfit and stubble. There is more violence, with more car chases and bigger explosions. Its an action movie of the old-school with a single-minded protagonist, get the fuel and keep on the road.
Alas, Max finds himself in a deal to help a band of noble peeps escape from the bad guys with cross-bows (and pretty rad outfits) who want their gas. The stand-off between the base of people and impending army of bad guys with Max there to save the day reminded me a lot of Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness.
The plot is thin but its a hell of a lot of fun, especially for an action movie from the seventies on a Australian film budget. Miller really lifts his game since the first flick and so do the stunt people who perform some pretty crazy acts of craziness.
Check it out, it's one of films you have to see- then you can go back to the first movie if your interest is sparked. Good times... it's a shame Aussie movies like this aren't made anymore.
