Review of Mad Max 2 (1981) by Kenneth L — 12 Jul 2010
Basically one long stunt sequence, interrupted by occasional plot or dialogue, but that's okay. This movie really has very little plot, and even less dialogue: Mel Gibson, the star of the movie, has probably around 20 actual lines.
For the most part it's all chases and fighting: imagine the truck chase scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, expand it to 20-25 minutes, multiply the number of vehicles involved by 10, and you have the climax of this movie.
We tend to write off action sequences as mindless, but if you think about this movie's sequences, you will realize that simply from a techincal perspective they took an immense amount of skill to make.
The stunts and editing are fantastic. The world of the movie is also fairly well thought-out: a postapocalyptic nightmare where people cling to whatever clothes and machines have survived. Also, the movie has a feral child with a mullet and a razor-edged boomerang, which is awesome.
This is like a textbook that action movies have been borrowing from ever since.
