Review of Mad Max (1979) by Dan C — 09 Sep 2012
I suppose this is another one of those movies that are important for the influence they exerted. I was expecting something of the caliber of the far superior Road Warrior, but perhaps edgier and grimmer due to its plot of murder and revenge.
I mean, look at the cover above: how could you go wrong? But the movie is very amateurish, with stilted, corny dialogue and wooden acting. Outside of the ornamented cars and slapped-together costumes, design is minimal if nonexistent.
Even the violence is tame, though this was released in '79. Compared to the sequel, practically the only thing to recommend this picture is some great car and motorcycle stunts, and a general air of ruin and disaster.
Those who love exploitation movie aesthetics -- without any actual exploitation -- would appreciate it as well.
