Review of Mad God (2021) by Scienceadvisor — 07 Jul 2022
Let me start with that this is not 100% stop motion. There is CGI and real people mixed in occasionally (probably due to the colossal amount of time and effort stop-motion takes). It is a bit jarring, but by that point you will probably not care. The only reason this is not scoring much higher is that this is not a movie, in the same way a walking simulator is not a game. It is visually stunning, but ultimately unfulfilling. Even without verbal narration, you expect some kind of world building and goal. There is none in this. That robs it of anything other than being a demonstration of ability to string together cool looking scenes that do not add up to anything meaningful. The ending can be summed up as "screw it and lets do acid". However it is interesting that it does engender the same uselessness in the final product, that was being portrayed throughout. A strange non-movie that is still very artful.
As others have warned, there is a lot of gore, but it is usually quite silly which robs it of any lasting disgust. So if you are looking for a one watch art piece, this is a great choice at 8.5/10. If you are looking for a horror movie, this is only a 4/10.
