Review of Mad Dog and Glory (1993) by Dane J — 18 Jul 2005
4 Movies, this is fucking action packed!
Well first and most depressingly was Hotel Rwanda. An unfortunately great film because the subject is so horrible. But the film and the telling of the story which is especially relevant during the similiar slaughter in Sudan. It told the story much like a documentary with a main character as it didn't seem swelled for emotion or art despite the fact that the cinematography was great and the acting was just amazing. Although I've heard people say over and over ohh wow the same thing is going on in Darfur, Sudan, and then it's just shrugged off...
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a really fun movie to watch. Almost exactly like Willy Wonka, this version had sequences that were more faithful to the book..or so I've heard, I havn't read the book. It was a worthy movie and as far as remakes go, seeing Tim Burton add his own touch was worthy of a new take on an old classic. Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp both give off the wall performances as the Mad Candy Geniusess in their own ways so it really doesnt hurt to have another version of a classic story.
The Wedding Crashers is without a doubt one of the funniest movies I have seen in about a year. It's phenomenal. I was lauhging almost through the whole thing, especially at the subtleties that both Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are so good at. An advisable film as it had both all the cliches of a romantic sex comedy as well as a ton of innovation. Plus Christopher Walken is in it. Awesome.
Last is the Bill Murray De Niro team up in Mad Dog and Glory. Based on a police photograhper who saves a mafia boss it's just a ridiculous plot with characters who are boring. There's Uma Thurman nude, but she wasn't as hot then so not even that saved this movie. It ended without resolving some of the only parts of the plot that mattered and rarely was funny when it was trying so hard to be the funny guy in class.
