Review of Machine Gun Preacher (2011) by Gawain D — 20 Sep 2013
It was ok but it is very very disjointed in its set pieces, one minute he was a really really bad ass then he was a literary born again christian with no real insight into character development and background, I felt it was( dare I say) 'a little amature' , with even a soap opera style budget and feel .
Also it wasn't hard hitting enough.. They had the opportunity to really bring home to you the terrible atrocities of the rebel regime against the civilian villagers, and the kidnap of the children, however it wasn't that shocking and didn't seem real it seemed watered down to appeal to a wider age group audience, only one scene slightly hit on the atrocities but other than that it was not realistic or believable, it was shockingly tame and shiny.
The message behind the film was good though, but poor character development and not enough depth and time put in to really understand him and develop his character let the film down, Gerrard butter did his best it wasn't his fault though .
It just basically felt cheap, a real missed opportunity.
