Review of Machete Kills (2013) by Mr G — 20 Jan 2014
Another sequel to a successful exploitation film that tries to be a bigger movie than actually trying to be funny.
Listen, the reason the first Machete was so good is because it was controlled, tamed for the most part, and came across with a message, and yet it still came off as silly, several movies like that have taken the same direction and gotten great praise, the reason why this is a better direction is because the old exploitation films that it parody's aren't as silly and over the top as you may think, they were also pretty tamed, which is why it works better as an exploitation film.
But when you go completely over the top with your characters, effects, explosions, and...add in Charlie Sheen, you don't get a parody of exploitation films, you get a parody that is parodying itself without even realizing it.
To put it simplistically; Machete Kills has it's moment, but the jokes are predictable, Danny Trejo doesn't seem to be trying, and it's un-original annoying direction ruins the movie for me, though, I can the charm behind it, it's certainly way better than some other exploitation films that took the same direction...
*Cough Hell Ride Cough*.
