Review of Machete Kills (2013) by Josh K — 04 Feb 2014
Really? I feel that critics have missed the point. I enjoyed this film. Sure its bad and its not a masterpiece or classic film, but I feel that Robert Rodrigues succeeded in what he was trying to do: make a film that actually resembles and feels like a grindhouse/B film and there he succeeded.
A sequel to Machete, the film focuses on the titular character who has to do a job for the U.S. President by stopping a mad revolutionary. The film takes Machete across Mexico and throughout some of the United States.
Danny Trejo is still tough and perfectly depicts Machete for the third time. The other actors are great, Damian Bichir as the crazy revolutionary, Sofia Vergara as an insane assassin and Amber Heard as an undercover agent, as well as returning actors Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba.
Charlie Sheen (under the name Carlos Estevez) wonderfully depicts the President, while the picked actors for the role of El Chameleon are absolutely funny. Mel Gibson wonderfully steals the film when he shows up as the villainous Voz.
Rodriguez has stated that this film is supposed to be similar in style in certain areas to The Empire Strikes Back and that could possibly be true. The film is laughable, but enjoyable, perfectly serving as one of those so bad its good films.
