Review of Machete (2010) by Joe M — 07 Nov 2012
2007's "Grindhouse" presented itself like a typical 1970's B-movie double feature. Inbetween the two main films were some faux trailers for other B-movie films that were "coming soon".
One of those trailers was for a film called "Machete". The trailer highlighted sex, explosions, and guns, in typical B-movie fashion. Jump ahead three years to 2010, and we are given a feature film adaptation of the trailer by the same name, "Machete".
The film follows ex-federale Machete as he goes on a revenge spree for the man who killed his wife and child. The acting is cheap and silly, with Robert Deniro giving a memorably cheesy (especially that souther accent) performance.
The other actors take what they are given, and have a lot of fun with it. The visual effects are extremely abundant and extremely good for a film with a low budget. The most memorable scene involves Machete escaping from the third floor of a hospital building, rappelling down to the second floor using a live man's intestines.
It is scenes like the one previously described that make this movie so much fun. Everything is absolutely implausible, but it makes for a wild ride. The plot moves at a steady pace, building to a grand slaughterfest finale.
My only problem with this film is it's focus. For a film named "Machete", not much of the focus is put on him. He seemed like a side character in his own film, a problem that is hopefully fixed in the 2013 sequel, "Machete Kills".
Overall, this a wild romp and a pretty good way to spend 100 minutes.
