Review of Machete (2010) by Jens S — 04 Feb 2013
Machete pretty much fails in most regards director Rodriguez triumphed in such Grindhouse and pulp masterpieces like Planet Terror or From Dusk Till Dawn. The difference seems to be the writing. While Quention Tarantino gave him great lines to work with in the other films, there are little redeeming qualities in the dialogs or plot here.
It's not even particularly funny, even though it wants to be. While Rodriguez has a cast to dream of, almost everyone feels underused and underchallenged with their roles. Even Lindsay Lohan's boobs and Jessica Alba's ass don't make up for that.
Of course you can't blame the film for being trashy when that is exactly what it wants to be, but it's just simply never as much fun as it could have been. I've had to endure a cut version, mind you, but even additional blood and splatter would not have changed much.
A rather hollow attempt and quite disappointing.
