Review of MacGruber (2010) by Justin R — 28 Mar 2011
I honestly had never seen the SNL sketches, but MacGuyver was ripe for parody - 10 years ago. Did this really start this late? This is why I was curious. It had to have been funny if it became this big so late. And I was greatly disappointed.
I don't know how this was for an SNL sketch, but the movie seems like all of his comedy bits are based on bad language, showing his butt, offering/doing sexual favors or over the top violence. It doesn't seem like there was any real parody of comedy other than maybe him breaking down emotionally every now and then. But that got tired fairly fast. About as close as it could have been as a comedy was probably that Val Kilmer's villain was so much smarter than MacGruber. But they never let that gel.
There are two good scenes of real comedy that made me chuckle, and then they were gone.
