Review of Ma mère (2004) by Danne M — 27 Aug 2007
While visually interesting in it's direction and good performances from Hubbert and Garrel, this is a movie that tried to hard to be provocative and shocking and forgot about the plot...and the plausibility.
While I don't doubt that there are places in this world where events such as these might take place, this story and the way it was portrayed didn't convince you. Much of the scenes and dialogue are disjointed and you must fill in the blanks for yourself which isn't a problem except that it keeps you separated from the characters like a voyeur instead of experiencing the film as if you were a part of it.
However, it fails by trying to be provocative for provocative's sake.
