Review of M (1931) by Jason K — 25 May 2008
I didn't care the inconsistent use of sound and a lot of the camerawork was wobbly, undesirable and overbearingly show-offy without being able to pull off its ambitious shots the way I Am Cuba did. Nitpicking aside, a wonderful film with great story, acting style and unforgettable visual moments. It'd been at least three years since I last saw this and yet I've never been able to forget the ball rolling out, the balloon in the power lines, the mark on the back, etc. There's something to be said for that. Lots of great suspense in favor of the child killer, and that can't be an easy task.
Chabrol's short remake on the Criterion edition is pretty great. I'd love to see Joseph Losey's version as well.
