Review of M (1931) by John H — 03 Jul 2008
An extraordinary film. Brilliant directing by Fritz Lang at the top of his game. Even more brilliant acting by Peter Lorre. Also noteworthy for its breakthrough uses of sound in what were still the early days of the sound era.
Most astonishing is that Lorre somehow manages to present his character as a sympathetic one despite the fact that he's a serial killer and a serial killer of young children at that. It's his sickness and not his crimes that preoccupies us. (It helps, of course, that Lang keeps the murders off screen.).
