Review of M (1931) by Brooker B — 10 Dec 2008
Absolutely stunning in every regard - photography, sound, performance, and content. the most complex, morally challenging film yet produced. it provides no easy answers for questions that every society must face: are there times when due process does more harm than good? what is the true value of the justice system? at what point does crowd mentality turn from constructive to destructive? what is the difference between criminals who choose it, and those who pursue it from compulsion? as the nazis were on the rise, fritz lang crafted a masterful story that essentially begged the german people to examine their own motives.
I didn't even mention peter lorre's career making performance.
