Review of M (1931) by Luigi R — 24 Aug 2009
Outrageously inventive in its shot composition, camera movements and angles, pacing, editing and sound design, as if Lang was gleefully discarding silent-era narrative conventions and wasn't yet tainted by the conventions of a thousand thrillers to come.
Less a "serial killer" or even crime-and-punishment story, really, than an examination of how a community responds like an organism to a contagion, with all the (often confused and messy) stages of an immune response.
