Review of M (1931) by Jen R — 15 Sep 2009
One of my favorite films of all time. It also includes one of the most effective foot-chases I have seen. I love a good foot-chase. They are uniquely suspenseful because they focus on the individual. It forces me to identify with the person being chased, whether I want to or not.
No one wants to identify with a pedophile and a serial killer, but it is impossible not to when he is in this scene. I remember watching M for the first time, and when this chase played I felt genuinely afraid for him.
He is hopelessly running and hiding; scared to death of the angry mob which has no moral qualms with ripping him apart limb from limb when they find him. And they will find him. They outnumber him greatly and his evasion is nothing but a stall for time.
