I learned about this film in film class a few years ago (one of the only classes I cared about). What I learned about it brought a lot of appreciation to it before we even watched it. Being the first film to use sound (other than just music) and using it the way it did, to blend scenes and foreshadow, and even be a plot-important device was incredible. It was amazing that so much could be visualized and actualized all at once. There were a lot of skeptics who thought adding sound to pictures would be redundant and pointless, and Fritz Lang kinda punched them square in the brains right away.

Along with all of these things, it also painted a portrait (with tremendous photography, I might add) of the mind of a serial killer. A portrait that is still pulled upon from many movies being made today.
