Review of M (1931) by Paul W — 10 Apr 2011
Still impressive 80 years later. An obvious classic and a part of cinema history, the books will tell you that every police thriller and serial killer movie made since 1931 owes a debt to the vision of M.
There's a wonderful tracking shot where Lang takes his camera through a room populated by beggars, then drifts up to and through a window into the room above, all in one take - and you actually see the glass pane quickly pulled across so the camera can get through.
Its great craftsmanship where you can still see the seams, and it's very charming.
