Review of M (1931) by Kinch K — 02 May 2012
The opening of this film is an absolute masterstroke of terror and restrained directing - it is worth watching for the first 10-15 minutes alone. The exposition sections left me a little cold, partly just because they seem so hackneyed now that the genre is so old, but from the moment the actual 'M' comes into play (I won't give it away for those who're yet to watch), the pace is great.
The underworld court scene is also great, primarily for Lorre's powerhouse embodiment of wretchedness. The very ending of the film, to be blunt, was stupid - summing up such an interesting ride in a simple truism about keepin' an eye on the kids.
But it was not stupid enough to take away from how great most if this film is.
