Review of Lymelife (2008) by Ashley J — 10 Dec 2009
This is The Ice Storm and American Beauty's less dark and much easier to swallow lovechild. It's nicely acted, nicely paced, with that right touch of dark humor. It's about the less idyllic side of suburbia, how things can go shitty and how it can easily go the other way as well. I like how the movie realistically portrays relationships - that it's always a two-way street, and it's complicated, despite our attempts to simplify it.
It's nice seeing Rory Culkin again, after witnessing him give a slam-dunk performance in Mean Creek. Emma Roberts also proves she's a cut above her Hollywood teen peers. It's a joy to see her play this character who's innocent and vulnerable, and worldly and provocative at the same time.
