Review of Lymelife (2008) by Thomas L — 28 Dec 2009
Bleh. Did we really need yet another movie about the misery that lurks behind middle-upper-class suburban gloss? And why did this have to be set in the 1970s? That makes it even more of a ripoff of Ang Lee's The Ice Storm, although I wasn't too crazy about that either.
Like The Ice Storm, Lymelife was about a lot of miserable people who vented their misery on other miserable people, but it wasn't really about anything. Nothing really happens in the end. Nothing really happened in The Ice Storm either, but at least it had Ang Lee and writer James Shamus making the bleh look good.
Lymelife has a great cast, but it's all for naught. Amazing, really. As with The Ice Storm, if I'd written the Lymelife script and tried workshopping it at the USC master's program where I went, my professors would've ripped it to pieces.
I suppose that's the bright side with shitty movies: It shows you that if you have enough persistence, you can do whatever you want.
