Review of Lust, Caution (2007) by Abigail K — 27 Jun 2008
This movie was disappointing. I'm not sure if this was because of the film's tone, or because there was something incoherent about what Lee was trying to convey.
Lee as a director, I think, lacks the ability to convey complex emotions with his cinematic repertoire. He has an amazing sense of subtlety; he can provide different shades to desire (both in its repressed and expressed forms) that never cease to amaze me, but I think that the subject material here (particularly its political aspects) demanded more out of him than he was capable of conveying.
