Review of Lust, Caution (2007) by Flora T — 06 Dec 2008
Anti-occupational sentiments lead a group of students in China to scheme and plot the assassination of a traitor. One event leads to another, and soon they are at a point of no return - especially so for the lead character.
Ang Lee doesn't shy away from the taboo of the erotic scenes (that nevertheless caused controversy), but uses it to emphasize the dangerous lust in the seduction act born out of patriotism and love.
It was brilliantly directed, and acted with heavy emotions by the cast. Shanghai in WWII was well-captured with the use of Shanghainese, the set and attires. The complementing soundtrack is also a must-listen, with simple but powerful scores.
A lengthy film, but enthralling every minute.
