Ang Lee presents another epic film, this time involving espionage in World War II-era Shanghai. Wei Tang gives a tremendous performance as Wong Chia Chi, a stage actress turned spy who sets out with her theatre troupe to assassinate a leading, treacherous politician (played with horrifying intensity by Tony Leung).
Problems arise when Wong's heart gets in the way of her mission and she must choose between love and country. A masterwork of an espionage film, and one of the great period epics of the last decade.
