Review of Lust, Caution (2007) by Markus S — 15 Dec 2008
Ang Lee definitely seems to do better when he sticks to making movies in China. Hulk was strange and Brokeback Mountain was boring as hell, but Lust, Caution is quite good. It is a bit overlong, but it is certainly never boring.
The performances are all strong. The period detail is excellent. The sex is graphic and, at parts, seems almost literally painful (for the characters and the viewers), but it is important to the story.
The movie isn't really earth-shattering in any way, but it is a very good drama for fans of Chinese movies or espionage stories.
