Review of Lust, Caution (2007) by Luna W — 09 Oct 2010
"Lust, Caution" is a terrific product of Eliee Chang (张爱玲)'s novel, Ang Lee's directing, and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (梁朝伟) and Tang Wei (汤唯)'s acting.
Chang's novel is known for its subtle, haunting, and tragic romance. This is captured beautifully by Ang Lee's focus of facial expressions at Majiang/Mahjong games, and layered and seductive conversations between Chia Chi and Mr. Yee. Violent and sadistic sex between the two at the beginning seem to be a channel for both to release pain in life. Twisted, the two grow closer.
Little emotion is revealed when Chia Chi is executed. Mr. Yee is left in a dark room with little light from the hallway, touching the bed sheet.
