Review of Lucky You (2007) by David L — 09 Jan 2008
Curtis Hanson has brought some terrific films alive - Wonder Boys & L.A. Confidential are outstanding. While Lucky You is incredibly disappointing work from him, it is Drew Barrymore who is a stand-out for the wrong reasons.
She is either horribly under-directed or terribly miscast - she and Bana have virtually no on-screen chemistry. Bana does his best with the very thin material, but the standout is Robert Duvall who impresses in a convincing turn as a poker guru.
He is great to watch and certainly renders this pretty ponderous, underwritten film moderately watchable. Debra Messing has a good screen presence, but is totally wasted in a ridiculously minor role.
