You don't really need to know about poker to enjoy this movie (I don't!), although I imagine it helps. It's not a typical romantic comedy/drama so anyone expecting that will be disappointed.
That said, as a story about one man's attempts to overcome his weaknesses and his past, it works very well. Anyone familiar with "Wonder Boys" in particular will recognise the tone of the movie and some of its themes.
It may not be Curtis Hanson's best movie, but it's definitely better than the poor cinema release it received here would indicate.
