Review of Lucky Number Slevin (2006) by Rip V — 16 Aug 2012
This iis a bit tricky. I thought the basic story was entertaining, BUT so many weird things happen and a few unnecessary twists make the story more complex than it needs to be. Normally I like complex, but this story doesn't need complexity, it would be much better if it was simpler. There's no need to suddenly rveal 40 minutes into this that Liu plays a coroner. Its just a really convenient fact that almost makes it seem like they had a loose end and needed to somehow tie it up so her character and the plot makes a little more sense. Instead, it just seems unbelievable and ridiculous.
Another thing that I find quite irritating about this film so far is the talent. Lately I have seen some awful movies with Morgan Freeman and I'm wondering what gambling debts he owes if he has to subject himself to this. He is a God! He goes from being in Oscar winning movies to this? Yikes. And Kingsley too? Some of his films are a bit hit and miss but with actors like Freeman and Kingsley, there should be a decent supporting cast. Nope. Hartnett is a one dimensional actor who won't be heard of in ten years and Liu is a mess in this. Tucci is awesome as always but could have done better than this.
