Review of Lower City (2005) by Jon C — 03 Jul 2007
Extremely predictable and has a really skimpy storyline which would be okay if it felt like it had a point to it. Unfortunately, this movie goes absolutely nowhere. The entire movie can be summed up in a line - essentially, the movie is just Deco and Naldinho getting jealous of each other when the other is with Karinna.
And that's literally the whole thing from Act 1 to Act 3. There is no subtext, no social relevance, etc. It really makes me wonder why someone felt this script was interesting enough to put on screen.
Braga and Moura are fine in their roles while Ramos seems a little flat in his...while the movie is watchable in individual scenes and there's a few moments that I liked, it fails as an overall film.
Nowhere close to being as good as The Motorcycle Diaries or City of God (both of which the box references and both of which are favorite films of mine).
