Review of Loving Vincent (2017) by Jeffrey C — 14 Jan 2018
I think many reviewers have missed something essential in this film. Yes it is gorgeous and a total tour-de-force of stylized animation - a must-see for anyone who has appreciated the energy and acuity of Van Gogh.
But... the simplicity with which the narrative is carried out by means of "moving through" Van Gogh's works is done with a humanistic and psychologically structured approach that mirrors his works.
These are relationships and haunts drawn from his final days, and they are woven into the visual fabric of the film/canvases in front of you. All in all, it yields tremendous balance to the whole effort, and is an accomplishment as sensitive as these visual treasures he left us.
I'm not sure what additional narrative these critics are looking for?
