Review of Loving Vincent (2017) by Richard H — 09 Nov 2017
Well, I'm a little torn. On one hand, this is a story we've all heard ad nauseam on how Van Gogh died. There's zero new information here and no new perspective or insight either. That said, it's a visually beautiful and engaging film and really that's kind of what matters more here.
It's a rotoscope oil paint movie! That's badass as hell. And considering everybody probably shot this on green screens I was also pretty impressed with the acting - it absolutely manages to come across despite being a like third degree delivery (from green screen to projected on canvases to painted to projected on screen as animation). And the art itself is stunning and clever, with almost every introduction of each characters represented visually as they were originally painted by Van Gogh.
So yeah, the concept overshadows the story but at the end of the day what did you really expect? Drink some caffeine and enjoy it for its beauty.
